SUMMARY:Dog Photography Tips & Tricks with Cathie Wheeldon
DESCRIPTION:Dog Photography Tips & Tricks with Cathie Wheeldon \nAs a Pet Professional for nearly 40 years including Professional Dog Trainer\, owner of Hug-a-Pup Dogsitting Services\, and foster home with Border Collie Rescue Ontario\, I’m well equipped and excited to also work with dogs and their people as a Dog Photographer and owner of Wheeldon Photography!  \nYour dog isn’t just a dog – they’re family. \nI believe every dog has a story to share. It’s important to capture those unique quirks\, personality traits\, and individual characteristics so that their story can shine through! I know how important dogs are to their owners – they’re family! I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to preserve the memories and special moments of cherished dogs for fellow dog lovers. Producing personalized wall art\, albums or other artwork that can be enjoyed for many years to come is a way to keep them with us always.  \nMy photography sessions are relaxed\, outdoors\, and completely dog-led. There’s no pressure to sit still or perform — we move at the dog’s pace\, allowing time to explore\, sniff\, and settle in naturally. This approach creates genuine expressions\, natural movement\, and images that truly reflect the dog’s personality. Combined with changing seasons\, beautiful\, and often epic\, locations\, every session is one-of-a-kind! \nWe’ll be chatting about the pet photography genre and I’ll share tips and tricks for working with animals. Safety is very important as is making sure that the animals are comfortable as their expression is key for their images! Animal handling\, management\, attention getters and use of light are just some of the tips I’ll be sharing. I’ll also discuss some editing techniques (and how to make that part of the job easier by considering a few things during the session!)\, as well as my approach to sessions with specific artwork in mind. Whether you’re looking to improve your dog photography or would like to take better photos of your own pet\, I’m happy to share some info to help you to build on your skills! \n  \nCathie Wheeldon – Wheeldon Photography \nCathie Wheeldon has been a Pet Professional for nearly 40 years\, including as a Professional Dog Trainer\, the owner of Hug-a-Pup Dogsitting Services\, a foster home with Border Collie Rescue Ontario\, the manager of Ryan’s Pet Food\, and now as a Dog Photographer with Wheeldon Photography. \nHer family includes her husband\, Simon\, their daughter\, Etta\, their Border Collies\, Zoinks & Retro\, a flock of Runner Ducks\, and two Cockatiels! They are lucky to live on a 21-acre wooded property just outside of Cayuga. \nCathie moved from her hometown of Stratford to Hamilton in 1992 to attend Mohawk College where she achieved her Diploma in Applied Music as a Jazz Vocal major (her only “stray” from animals!!). \nIn 1997 she apprenticed with McCann Professional Dog Trainers where she became a full-time Head Instructor and fell in love with dog training\, teaching\, and dog sports. She has been active in Flyball and Disc Dog\, and Cathie has done extensive training in Agility\, Obedience\, and Herding. Besides teaching\, she and her dogs performed as part of the McCann Dogs team in their Agility and Flyball performances at various venues including The Royal Winter Fair\, Ontario Place\, All About Pets\, and The Sportsman Show. While teaching at McCann’s\, she started her in-home boarding business\, Hug-a-Pup Dogsitting Services\, which became her full-time job\, and is now in its 24th year! \nCathie has continued to further her dog training education over the years and has embraced a game-focused\, positive reinforcement approach that she loves. She knows that an understanding of dog behaviour and a focus on relationship building is so very important when dealing with dogs\, and she works hard to develop trust and a connection with each dog she works with. Her many years of experience have helped her to provide an enriching and positive environment where dogs feel safe and relaxed. \nCathie is now an experienced Dog Photographer and is able to use all of these skills and years of experience to create meaningful artwork of her client’s beloved pets. Cathie is well-equipped and excited to work with dogs and their owners! \n  \nwww.wheeldonphotography.com \nwww.instagram.com/wheeldonphotography \n  \nDoors open at 6:30\nMeeting starts at 7:00 \nYou can find details about our guest policy here.

SUMMARY:2026 Annual Spring Exhibition at Edinburgh Square
DESCRIPTION:It’s that time again\, 2026 Display \nHaldimand Photography Club is hosting our Annual Spring Exhibition at Edinburgh Square.  This year there is a shorter display time\, as the facility is doing major renovations. We can display from February 19th to March 17th\, with a reception on Saturday February 21st\, 2026. You have two options for submitting photos. A framed print (this is our preference)\, or a digital photo\, which will be displayed on a loop on the TV in the display room. The framed/canvas photo must have a wire across the back for secure hanging. If the photo is on Foam Core\, we can secure it to the wall using command strips. If you have named your photo\, include that along with your name and if applicable the price with each photo\, Edinburgh Square will print cards with that info. \nA folder has been created in Dropbox for you to submit digital photos\, the link can be found in the member’s area under “Submit Your Images“. \nThe framed photo can be any size\, however\, the minimum frame size is 5 x 7.  The theme for this year is as follows: OPEN THEME\, any genre.  You also have the option of selling your print\, just remember Edinburgh Square will take 30% commission of the selling price. If you don’t want to sell the framed photo you can offer to sell just the print\, but you need to indicate this (also applies to the digital photos). \nRemember we are getting media coverage of this event so let’s fill the room with all your great photos. \nPlease drop off your photos to Edinburgh Square between February 17-19th\, 2026 between 10:00 am and 4:30 pm. \nNOTE:  The Exhibition has been extended for a week\, photos must be out by Tuesday March 24th.  The Square is closed Sunday and Monday\, we are suggesting that you pick up your photos on Saturday March 21st.   Please make arrangements to pick up your prints on Saturday March 21st\, if you can’t pick them up on the 21st\, then you can pick them up on Tuesday March 24th.  This will be the last day for pickup!    If you would like them moved to RVilla let Randy know and the team will take care of moving them to the Villa.  Photos cannot remain in Edinburgh Square after the 24th. \nAny questions contact Randy at…..rlcarter653@gmail.com \nRandy Carter \nPublication and Display Coordinator

SUMMARY:February Photo Challenge
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nTexture is so fun to work with! Not all of our natural elements will be exposed this month\, but we may have bark\, stone or interesting architectural finishes close at hand.  If the weather is not great for being outdoors with our cameras\, this month’s challenge can easily be done indoors. Get creative with fabric\, paper\, food\, sewing essentials or even the shiny coat on the cat!  Textured surfaces also make surprising backdrops for portraits.  This is a good month to practice with lighting a subject or maybe spend time on changing settings to create different results on your portrayal of texture. \nMembers can upload images to the dropbox through the website for tickets to the Holiday Potluck prize draw.  You are also welcome to share on our Club Facebook page. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:January Photo Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Ahhhh Canadian Winter!  At this time\, some of us have fled.  Some of us are still waiting for the white stuff to fall… and stay.  We likely haven’t suffered near as much as we think\, but knowing we have another long haul of winter ahead\, let’s share the “Best Of” this season. \nWhen we have a good amount of snow…. that often brings the best of our outdoor winter activities into play.  Ponds freeze over for hockey and snowmen spring up on front yards. Hiking\, skiing\, sledding and ice fishing incite some of us to get outdoors.  On the other hand\, some of us prefer to enjoy warm hands!  So we enjoy a hot bevie or two and cozy up indoors.  At some point\, we crack open our camera gear and start snapping. \nWhat scenes of this season do you feel capture the true essence of winter? \nMembers can upload images to the dropbox through the website for tickets to the Holiday Potluck prize draw.  You are also welcome to share on our Club Facebook page. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:December Photo Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Let’s go out on a limb here and say that despite our Canadian grudging about winter…. we truly deep down adore all signs of the spirit of the holidays. Whether it is the nostalgia of Christmas times past\, or seeing the season’s wonder for the first time through a grandchild’s eyes.  The binging of romantic Hallmark movies that always end well and perfectly timed snow that arrives once all the holiday shopping is done. \nWe bake\, we prep\, we sing carols and roll in the snow.  We celebrate this time in so many ways.  As our culture is so diverse\, we all have different ways to enjoy this time and find meaning in different activities.  Traditions of all kinds seem most prevalent during the holiday season.  The annual ball\, the family gatherings\, the bake sales\, New Year’s promises…. \nWhat I enjoy most at this time of year is the lights.  Indoor\, outdoor…everything just twinkles a little bit more and creates so many opportunities to capture photographs in mood lighting.  I can’t wait to see what you share with us about what this season means to you. \nMembers can upload images to the dropbox through the website for tickets to the Holiday Potluck prize draw.  You are also welcome to share on our Club Facebook page. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:African Safari Photography Adventure
DESCRIPTION:Please Note that this presentation has been moved to Thursday Nov 20 \nMeet Connie Smith\, our presenter \nWith the first trip\, I had just retired after 33 years or working at Hydro One/Ontario Hydro and decided to treat myself to something that was on my Bucket List…a trip to South Africa.  I booked my trip with Approach Tours and enjoyed it so much\, that I decided to apply to be a Group Guru (Tour Leader) a couple months after I returned.  Once hired\, they asked if I would mind going back to South Africa as my first trip as a Guru.  How could I say no to something that I thoroughly enjoyed.  October 2024 I was back on the plane to South Africa with 25 adults aged 55+ guests. \nConnie will be presenting her  her first hand account of photographing on safari!  Get ready to go wild as she gives us some tips on her adventure tales!! \nDoors open at 6:30 pm\, Meeting starts at 7 pm

SUMMARY:November Photo Challenge
DESCRIPTION:  \nI think it’s safe to say everyone can appreciate the draw of a great Black & White image.  Whether dramatic or subtle\, there is something about the details that are captured in a somehow more intense way\, than in the vibrancy of a full colour spectrum.  It’s vintage\, it’s modern\, it’s suitable to architecture or portraits and the most incredible landscapes. \nFor myself? The distinction between B&W and colour photos is like comparing reading the written word from a page in a book or that from a screen. When one studies it\, the details pool into your brain in layers (light\, shapes\, line\, texture…) and a story unfolds.  As our light fades this month\, it’s the perfect time to ease back to shooting like it’s a “SLOW FOOD” event.  Take time to think it through\, digest a scene and then savour what we create. \nWe’ve already seen a handful of amazing B&W images surface from our members.  Here is a little secondary challenge. Consider taking a look at images you have shot with the sole purpose of displaying in colour\, and see what changes in the image when the saturation is removed. \nMembers can upload images to the dropbox through the website for tickets to the Holiday Potluck prize draw.  You are also welcome to share on our Club Facebook page. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Cops N Rodders Car Show
DESCRIPTION: This car show is free admission and a great opportunity to go out and photograph old cars.  Last year there was well over 500 cars on display at the park.  We could meet up in the parking lot and walk around as a group or you can wonder on your own!  Not only are there old and new cars\, but they also have vendors\, food trucks and raffles.  We will be there at the parking lot at 9:00 am if you would like to meet up.  This is a major fundraiser for the Hamilton Police.  More details available on the website see link below. \n  \nThis event is held to support Special Olympics Ontario initiatives and all proceeds from this event go directly to Special Olympics.  \nIn 5 short years we have exceeded all of our goals that we set way back in 2015 to support Special Olympics Ontario. Those goals were: \n\n$10\,000 to Special Olympics Ontario (in 2018 we gave $10\,631.05 to Special Olympics Ontario).\nHave an attendance of 500 cars at the show (over 800+ vehicles attend the show in 2023 and we topped it off with a cheque to Special Olympics Ontario over $32\,218.00).\nWe had a 10 year commitment we made it! Come celebrate our 10th Anniversary’ with us this year!\n\nOur current goal is simply to continue to have fun with this show and raise as much as we can for Special Olympics Ontario!

SUMMARY:St. Albans Church is an Architectural Treasure
DESCRIPTION:St. Albans Anglican Church is a quaint stone church located in the heart of Rockton\, Ontario.  It was built in 1869. Originally\, services were held in this building twice on Sundays and by 1949 were only held monthly. Services stopped in 1950. Since then\, it is only used for occasional concerts\, weddings\, funerals and similar celebrations. \nThis church has 3 stained glass windows featuring faith\, hope\, and charity.  We are hoping to have a model in a vintage wedding dress and veil included in this photo session.  (Keep in mind that she is NOT a professional model and will need some direction.) \nThere are NO WASHROOMS.  I suggest you go to the Tim Hortons at Peter’s Corners before you come into Rockton. \nThe church has a cemetery which has some interesting tombstones for those who like to shoot graveyard and creepy crawly photos. \nThis event is weather permitting. \nFor those interested in having lunch\, the Cookhouse Bistro is an excellent restaurant.  It is very small\, so if you are planning to go there after the shoot\, please make your own reservations.  Their phone number is 519-647-2012 (787 Old Highway 8). \nCost: $15 per person. Payment is made through e-Transfer. please use the following address treasurer@haldimandphotographyclub.com add  St. Albans to comment/note section \n[rtec-registration-form]
